URGENT NEED:
PMHS-CV Takes in Dogs from Suspected Dog Fighting Ring with More on the Way
Pope Memorial Humane Society – Cocheco Valley, a leading animal shelter serving Strafford County and Southern Maine, has taken in four dogs from a suspected dog fighting operation in New Jersey. This rescue effort was conducted in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States, which saved over 120 dogs during the mission. More dogs from this operation are expected to arrive at PMHS-CV in the coming days.
Many of the rescued dogs arrived with scars and required ongoing treatment for various ailments and untreated injuries. Dogfighting inflicts severe, often fatal injuries and egregious suffering. Dogs bred and conditioned for fighting endure a lifecycle of abuse, with injuries ranging from severe bruising and deep puncture wounds to broken bones. These dogs often die from dehydration, infection, blood loss, exhaustion, or shock.
“When they came to us, they were naturally, extremely fearful,” said Caryn Fugatt, Shelter Manager. “I can’t even imagine what they were exposed to. We were happy to assist and will continue to as more are ready to be placed and space allows.”
Over the following weeks, staff and volunteers worked diligently to rehabilitate the dogs, all of whom were puppies ranging from four months to a year old. When they came to PMHS-CV they were scared to walk on cement and would shake uncontrollably in their kennels, terrified of a hand reaching out to them. As they received care and kindness, their personalities began to shine, and their confidence began to grow. They began to trust and enjoyed walks, playtime, and human interaction more and more each day. The transformation was incredible, and staff is excited to be able to help more dogs in need.
“Of the original dogs, three have been adopted into loving homes,” Fugatt added. “The youngest just became big enough to receive all of her vaccines, so she’s finally up for adoption as well!”
PMHS-CV frequently assists with emergency cases like these, often requiring immediate action with little lead time. Contributions to the shelter are crucial for handling these situations and saving as many animals as possible. Dogs that come to the shelter in this condition, often with extreme medical and/or behavioral issues, require an abundance of resources. From items as simple as food and toys, to bigger expenses like vet care and behavioral support, it’s a tall order. Contributions will allow Pope Memorial Humane Society to keep taking in dogs from this unfortunate situation as well as so many others like it.
